`Protect the King'' website hacked... Not

The Bangkok Post:

The government is tracking computer hackers who infiltrated the ``Protect the King'' website and replaced the webpage with a loan advertisement.

``We are tracking them down and are considering lodging a police complaint today,'' acting government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said yesterday.

PM's Office Minister Sathit Wongnongtoey confirmed the website had been hacked.

The PM's Office learned about the hacking last night when a link to www.protecttheking.net from the government's official website, www.thaigov.go.th, showed  a mortgage advertisement with a fairytale king illustration instead of the website's usual entry page. The ad was still posted last night.

BP: A more simple explanation is that Whois.com shows the domain name is now owned by another person. The domain was listed as expired on September 4, 2009 whereas the Whois.com now states the domain was created on "21 Oct 2009". Thus, the simpler, more plausible explanation is that some bureaucrat forget to renew the domain name. Well, at least, for the bureaucrat's sake the new owner is only advertising loans and it was not picked up by some anti-lese majeste person who then used to promote certain VCDs and other nefarious activities...

btw, if the Minister and Panitan are so unaware of what is happening, does it inspire confidence in you that they will be able to track them down?

Just hope government will not insist on solving this case, so police has to dig up a poor bugger guilty of hacking the site. But after arresting the "rumor mongers" everything is possible.

This is hilarious. They didn't even notice it's a blog about financial issues, not a loan advertisement.

Do you suppose the arrest warrant will have a picture of the fairytale king from the blog's home page?

It's not even a .th domain, but a worldwide .net one. "The King" in this may just as well refer to Elvis Presley.

On the other hand, letting a domain expire is the trademark Thai sloppiness.
