FT Interview with Abhisit:
FT: What about the Lese Majeste law? It has caused Thailand some very bad publicity, do you think it needs to be changed?

Abhisit: I think the way it is enforced needs to be managed.

FT: What does that mean?

Abhisit: It means that there has to be clear guidance as to what the law says and how people who violate the law or are suspected of violating the law should be treated. I think the problem has been either too liberal an interpretation of what it means and also some actions that only create more confusion and conflict surrounding the law.

FT: Can you give me specifics on that?

Abhisit: The latest case with Prachatai website was definitely mishandled and certainly went against my policy and apparently action was taken by people who were not supposed to be in charge of this issue.

FT: That wasn’t under the Lese Majeste law, it was under the computer crimes act?

Abhisit: That’s what I mean. People went to the people who handle the computer crimes and used this and that reason and it turned out like that.

FT: And your ability to influence and control that…?

Abhisit: Before the prachatai case I thought that there had been quite a good working relationship between people who run websites, the police who are working on this.

FT: And that broke down?

Abhisit: I hope that was an isolated incident and would be put right

BP: Willing to grant Abhisit some leeway as he must have a lot on his plate, but since the initial arrest of Chiranuch of Prachtai, she has faced 9 additional charges. At some point, he needs to turn his words into action or at least set up some process which will actually be followed by the authorities.

So it seems as Prachatai reports:
On Apr 24, Papatchanan Ching-in, leader of a group of red-shirts in Nakhon Ratchasima province, reported to police after arrest warrant had been issued for her by the provincial court on the previous day.

She and her friends were charged with lèse majesté after they had staged a protest against President of the Privy Council Gen Prem Tinsulanonda, the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), and the government by burning a mock coffin at the province’s Tao Suranari Statue on Apr 7.

On the coffin, they reportedly put a message referring to Prem by a royal prefix to mock what was believed to be PAD leader Sondhi Limthongkul’s slip of the tongue when he routinely appeared on his ASTV on Apr 3, saying, ‘the yellow shirts come out to protect Gen Prem, as […censored to save Prachatai of another possible charge..] is President of the Privy Council’. (see clip in Thai).

BP: The part about what Sondhi L said which Prachatai didn't include is in this blog post. Sondhi L hasn't being charged with lese majeste over what he said so then don't see why can't post about it.
