UPDATE: Anasuya of Channel News Asia also has a report on the bunkers.

Have already blogged on the Justice Minister's trip to Sisaket with the foreign media, but the Straits Times also reported (subscription only):

The Thai authorities have built 340 bunkers in two schools and several villages close to the Cambodian border in the province of Si Saket.

The bunkers are made of concrete, earth and sandbags, and were built at a cost of 40 million baht ($1.2 million).
...
Mr Wichit Buakaew, 43, a volunteer civilian militiaman at the Ban Pom-Sa-Ron school, told The Straits Times: 'The bunkers are good - just in case - but we are not worried.' His three children are among the 500 students studying at the school.

The school is less than 10km from the contentious Preah Vihear temple, which lies on the shared border between Thailand and Cambodia.

BP: Had never heard of bunkers being built before...

That is so 1940!

Coming from a country with extensive experience in building and busting bunkers,I think in nearly year 2010 this is a utterly waste of resources, including the money that did not went into building them itself.

My guess would be that theses bunkers will just crumble, when hit with everything bigger than Chinese fire cracker.

Why not invest the money in the schools and in better relations with the neighbours?

Well there is always money in concrete, that no doubt explains the bunkers.

This is not unusual or new. It has been going on for years. In recent years, each time there is a spat with Cambodia, the newspapers and television usually show school kids building these or running into them.
