Have already blogged on the arrests of the two persons arrested under the Computer Crimes Act for allegedly spreading rumours about HM the King - see here and here. In the end, it appears that one of the two was arrested for merely translating a foreign news article reporting that stock market fell on rumors about the health of HM the King than starting the rumor. Then a third person was arrested and later a fourth, a doctor. "What is most striking about the use of the law is the government's simple-minded emphasis on choking off expression and its failure to offer any serious vision for a contemporary information order," said Michael Montesano of Singapore's Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. BP: How do the police prove to the judge the information was false? Do they check first? Or just assume that someone has checked for them?

Not long ago I checked my server stats and found had I had no hits from Thailand today. I then realized it was just shortly after 1:00 am, the server resets at midnight, and few if any Thai hits appear at night on the weekend. This insignificant panic attack reminds me that we are all under their thumb to some degree and we have to be vigilant if not careful about what we say. This is not a good situation and is a stark reminder that in other places, not too distant, journalists have just disappeared into the night never to be seen again. The arbitrary use of the LM and computer Crime and other media related laws is a direct assault on the media as well as the people. A very sad fact is that the majority, media included, either don't know , don't care or just go along with the noose tightening around their throats waiting for the floor to drop out from beneath their feet.
I think India is also following on the Thai model. Somebody replied to a letter from a High Judge, but Police could not find for 2 years who replied, so they went berserk and arrested some unrelated person charging them for Computer Crimes. It is almost like this India Judge is a King and Les Majeste is committed. report: http://ow.ly/1G2mO |
