UPDDATE: Trying to balance a fine line between new readers and those who closely follow Thai politics and trying to use simpler titles. Thepthai is not the Democrat Spokesman with a capital S. He is actually Democrat Party leader's personal spokesman - the party leader being Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. Matichon quotes Thepthai, a Democrat spokesman, as stating that Thaksin has twittered about the conflicts between the reds and Thepthai states the conflict has arisen as Thaksin is trying to bring all the red shirts together. Thaksin is like the owner of a dog farm who gets dogs from different places and brings them together. One day the food runs out and he throws them a single bone and so that that there is barking is normal. However, if lots of bones are thrown then they will be quiet (พ. BP: So if you were a red shirt, would you feel happy that the spokesman of the main government party refers to you as dogs? This kind of talk from Thepthai (Abhisit's personal spokesman) and others in the party like Satit (PM Office's Minister), and Thawaorn (another vocal Minister) occurs very regularly. Thepthai thinks Thaksin stirring them, but Thaksin doesn't need to do much when the Democrat spokesman compares the red shirts to dogs. Now, you wonder why some of the rural supporters of Thaksin are angry when after being looked down upon by years, they are not compared to dogs.

In fairness to Theptai, he is referring to the spectacle recently offered by the leadership of the red shirts: ถึงกรณีที่แกนนำกลุ่มคนเสื้อแดงแตกคอกัน Having followed the trading of insults and accusations between Seh Daeng and Jatuporn as reported in Matichon over the past few days, I would submit that the comparison is not entirely out of place.
So if you were a dog, would you feel happy that the spokesman of the main government party refers to you as "red shirts" ?
BP, did you blog on Kattiya's appearance at the Nation Khattiya also said that Thailand had three types of people: "Normal buffalos" - those who watch TV Channels 3, 5, 7, 9 and so on. "Stupid buffalos" - those who watch ASTV "Ordinary citizens" - those who watch the red-shirt TV station That was rather straightforward, no metaphors. There were other interesting quips: - You say over and over again that you never lie, so tell us about the bomb at the Army headquarters. - On that I have to lie a little. Or this: Then discussion went from China's revolutions to Napoleon to how real "warriors" dealt with their unchanged underwear. And at this point, he responded to many questions with a blunt "You don't understand warriors".
Yeah you see StanG, there is a lot of different between who said it, a spoke person of the PM and a hard line military man.
StanG - you are comparing an outspoken military general with a Democrat Party (government?) spokesman - in effect flattering Seh Daeng! However if the point you are trying to make is that the military should stay out of politics, then I agree wholehearedly.
I'm not defending Theptai, but, apparently, he wasn't the first one as Sopon in the Nation quotes reds using terms like decomposed dog to call each other. As for Kattiya, he is not a nobody in the red movement, there's a good chance his views are not unique.
Don't know what is happening to my comments, but during the latest red spat one of the red leaders called Panlop a dog, too. Maybe Theptai was playing on the theme. Theptai was also probably referring to red leaders fighting for control of the movement. The fight for the bone was for everybody out there to see. Panlop met Thaksin and declared Chavalit a new leader, and the usual leading trio were not having any of it. In the meantime Chalerm was calling Sudarat a cow in his own fight for control of Thaksin's party and Bangkok MPs. Regardless, Theptai might have overstepped the line, but reds can't seriously claim it as an excuse for anything they are about to do just like Hun Sen can't claim what Kasit said about him a year ago as a justification for the amount of vulgarities and abuse he's dishing out at Thailand and Abhisit now.
Trash talker is on both side anyway. So it is no surprise here. But... Have you ever wonder why a "nice guy" like Dem has a trash talker like Theptai as their spoke person. Technically speaking, since he is the party spoke person, what he said in public can be considered as an official Dem opinion.
@StanG: The argument that "it is OK for one person to say this because someone else said something just as bad" is bankrupt. It has no legs at all. But then you know that of course… and are doubtless hoping we don't.
Maybe they put Theptai in this position so that Abhisit doesn't have to do it himself and preserve his clean image. Theptai is kind of his personal spokesman, right? |
