Don't tell soldiers that the GT200 devices don't work

The Nation:

He [Fourth Army Area chief Lt-General Pichet Wisaijorn] said he wanted academics to look at the big picture and pay attention to the opinions of the officers on the ground. The device gave them confidence to do their jobs in the area, he said.

The Bangkok Post:

Meanwhile, security forces in the South are unhappy about the bomb detectors amid the negative media reports, says an army source.

Army chief Anupong Paojinda treated the controversy as an urgent issue during his visit to Yala province on Thursday and yesterday where he talked to officers who run GT200 bomb detectors, said the source.

"But recent reports have made the operators less confident even though they insist the devices work," the source said.

One soldier died and two were wounded in a bomb and shootout attack by at least four armed militant suspects in Pattani's Mayo district yesterday.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban yesterday pleaded for understanding of security officers in the South who rely on bomb detectors to do their jobs.

"They asked the government for the GT200, so we bought them," he said.

BP: Well who told the security officers that the devices worked in the first place? Now, Suthep could rightly claim previously that the government cannot be blamed for the military's incompetence in procuring useless devices when the government did not know the devices did not work. However, they have been put on notice now given the UK ban also includes the GT200 device.

There is surely no excuse for deliberately ignoring what is a tsunami of criticism of these devices. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that empty plastic boxes and laminated business cards do not make a reliable bomb detection device.

But Abhisit, Anupong and Suthep appear oblivious. An inability to recognise the every-day reality that everyone else enjoys in favour of some kind of distorted internal reality has a name. It is called psychosis.

To be prepared to endanger the lives of those using them and those relying on those using them simply so that troops on the ground feel more confident and that the incompetence and possible corruption of those who decided to buy the devices should not come to light is surely evidence of a cynicism and reckless disregard for the safety of Thai people.

Both Abhisit and Suthep should both be required to resign forthwith, and Anupong should face a court-martial for inaction likely to endanger the lives of the troops under his command.

The political contributions issue which shows this government is dishonest, the fact that this government is now deemed to be more corrupt than the Thaksin government, the fact that the 2006 coup has been shown to be disastrous for Thailand, and the fact that certain people who have always professed not to be involved in politics are clearly shown to have lied repeatedly are surely sufficient justification for what many now believe is the coming civil war in Thailand.

The Thai people ought to be tired of this nonsense, and the perpetrators of these tragedies against the Thai people should be put on notice that their time of impunity is approaching an end, and that they will be held accountable.

It's a disgrace.

Would it give them confidence if they found out Colt forgot to drill a hole in the barrel of their rifle? Or that the amour on their tank was actually just cardboard in between 2 pieces of tin? or it can go on and on. If the device does not work they really shouldn't have any confidence.

Once again if Anapong, Suthep, or now Pichet is willing to personally show us in a real world situation, like the Cambodian mine fields that it works, then I'll believe that it works. Until then they are sending their troops into harms way knowing they may be put into real danger by a device that is a hoax and that is unethical, immoral and criminal.

To Anonymous2, we can say what we want and how Abhisit, Anupong and Suthep should react or should resign but the real thing is nothing will happen. Yes the Thai people ought to be tired of these things and much more but you must understand that the Thai people will not do anything. Inside the Thai DNA is to avoid all confrontations and embarrassments. Thais are brought up to follow the leader and the dog will not bite you. I really hope the Thais will change and will want to change.

JT, I've been avoiding this gt200 scandal precisely for this reason - trying to get Thai bigshots admit their professional incompetence is like nailing a jelly to a wall.

I also don't see any practical use in trying to embarrass them any further.

StanG fires off another salvo towards his own feet.

Because they will not admit their incompetence and corruption is precisely the reason why they must be embarrassed further Stan.

Thais will only react to pain. When the pain of the embarrassment, scorn and mockery becomes too much to bear, they will act. Too little too late of course, but they are Thais, so we must expect that.

The right thing to have done is to come clean and take decisive action on day 1. But then they are Thais so the concept of decisive action on day 1 is a bit hazy. One of those things the hated foreigners do but which Thais are way too smart to learn from.

Thais only react to pain???? Where do you find these Thais?

Modus operandi is to admit to nothing, sweep things under the carpet and wait until it all blows over, and this is precisely what will happen here.

Everybody is just trying to save face.

It's interesting contrasting the action taken here with the resignation of the Minister of Public Health (due to having spent money on projects deemed uneccessary).

160 million baht on an empty box? Can it get more uneccessary than that? But then, as in BP's CNS Connection post, just look at who was behind the purchasing.

Annonymous2:

If you are going to condesend to an entire country, it is probably a good idea, in terms of of looking slightly less fatuous, if you first try to find out what a metaphor is.

@Mithran:

Evidently you don't agree but can't quite find a way to refute so you make personal points instead and hope nobody notices the lack of substance.

I guess you didn't see this bit: "The following remarks address the Thai poo-yay... "

I suspect I probably know a little more about metaphor than you think, for reasons that need not concern us here. In this context, I am satisfied that the use of the word was correct.
