The Bangkok Post:

A multi-billion-baht convention centre planned for Phuket under the Thai Khem Khaeng investment programme has been stalled amid corruption allegations, according to Finance Ministry officials.

Designers and architects bidding for the project have allegedly been asked for kickbacks as high as 41% from state officials.

A total of 2.6 billion baht has been allocated to the project, with one educational institution awarded 100 million baht to develop designs for the new international centre.

But sources said that local politicians with interests in the project demanded kickbacks of as much as 45% for the contract. Final "tea money" payments were settled at 41 million baht, or 41%, for the deal.

BP: So what party are those local politicians from? From one certain party *cough* Democrats *cough* who dominate the South?

well, it's obvious that you and the Bangkok Post as well as the Tammasat professors who backed out of the Phuket project because they were afraid to get "dirrty hands" are all on the payroll of Thaksin.

Everybody knows that the Democrat Party Thailand is the party of "uncorruption" and is an essential antidote to the previous party-in-power-in-Thailand, the party of "corruption".

Public Servants everywhere are for the most part are offensive parasites on the jugular of society. They stifle innovation and retard the private sector with reams of regulations that generally serve no useful purpose. They are paid from taxing productive society, have generous retirement provisions, jobs for life and often subsidized housing.

Then to further add to the insult of their useless existence their greed extends into acquiring undeserved wealth through corruption that again is funded by the tax payer. They are an abomination, most should be fired and a minimal necessary staff maintained. Probably only about 10% serve any useful function.

I have to say this once again, every Thai knows about this. But what are they doing? Khraeng-Jai in the blood. They should voice out for goodness sake. Yes on one side it is corruption but on the other side they allow it to happen.

David - If BP and the Post are on Thaksin's payroll, whose are you on? I guess you neglected to read all the reports that the Democrats are once again firmly entrenched at the trough.

BP: RR if it is the same David, he meant as saracsm

BP - How dare you to imply that the Democrats are taking the kickbacks! Democrats epitomize all the goodness and morality in the Thai society. Thai people are already very lucky to have Apisit as PM. You don't want to argue with me cuz I'm just repeating what Gen Prem said. And you of all people should know that Prem is beyond reproach and criticisms of all kinds.

In Thailand, you should think twice before offending any pooyai....

yes, my comment is meant to be ironic and sarcastic, ie., meaning to point out complete and utter hypocrisy of the Democrat/PAD/Yellow/NATION/ASTV/Prem etc. point of view.......

I think the present situation in Thailand is ripe for a Not the Nation, John Stewart/Daily Show, Stephen Colbert-type approach.....

Ricefield Radio - i think David's comment are ment to be for sarcastic expression.

Btw, I have asked my girl friend who is a hard line democrat supporter why she like Abhisit so much, and the response was "He one of a few Thai who can represent the country, he is charismatic and he can speak English properly"...... there you go, that's what's in the mind of most "Elite" Bangkokian, no they dont talk about his policy, no they dont talk about his questionable ethical conduct, no they dont talk about his supposedly "clean" hand. Yes they instead talked about how he is "presentable" .....

an interesting example of the ironic approach to social commentary on the present situation in Thailand (which also hits hard at the seemingly infinite layers of hypocrisy among the Thailand elite) is the recent post on AbsolutelyBangkok titled "Thailand and the Desire Economy" per the following link:

With all the Abhisit and government-bashing going on, it is time to give praise when and where praise is due, and in this light, let's all put our hands together and give the Abhisit government a round of applause for swiftly mounting an anti-corruption investigation into the now-exposed corrupt activities of the various Thailand Democrat party officials in Phuket who are part of this record-setting 41% kickback scheme in connection with the construction of the new Convenetion Center in Phuket....

I am sure that once the evidence is methodically collected and they are successfully prosecuted and found guilty, they will not only have to return the kickback monies received but also(in a manner similar to Thaksin and his family), the remainder of their entire family's wealth and property, and will assuredly be spending many years in a 20-person-to a-cell Thai prison similar to other persons recently found guilty of various important crimes against the State.
