Have previously blogged on GT200 "bomb detectors", in reality they are just voodoo-like dowsing rod devices. After a BBC Newsnight investigation, the UK government has stated they will place limited export ban on such devices which would seem to include the GT200 device. The BBC has the UK government statement:
BP: Unfortunately, for legal reasons they cannot extend the ban to include Thailand, but the Thai government should carefully consider the use of GT200 device given the UK government statement. The UK director of the company has been arrested on suspicion of fraud for misrepresentations over the device. Will the Thai authorities continue to use the GT200 devices? Will Ministers and high-level forensic officials in Thailand still stand by claims that the devices work? btw, the BBC Newsnight article states:
BP: As far as BP is aware, Thailand has only purchased the GT200, which is essentially the same, but just labeled with a different name so this is likely what the Beeb is referring to.

This device has been know as a fraud for some time, yet the Thai authorities love it and want to buy more. One ought to assume handsome kick-backs have been enjoyed by certain Army officials at the direct expense of Thai lives or at the very least at a sever risk to Thai lives. Will the government investigate? Not while the Army pulls the strings. Will anyone investigate? Not while the Army and its backer pulls the strings. Will anyone care? probably not. Mais pen rai.
I sense a line in amulet bomb detection devices being blessed and prepared in a temple as we speak. Lots of money to be made for an entrepreneurial monk. Or maybe bomb victims just have bad karma so deserve being blown to pieces? Shit. It's all too confusing for my "misinformed" farang brain.
What will Dr Pornthip say?
BP - your Thai GT200 postings were extremely helpful when we were researching the Newsnight report and we originally intended to cover the GT200 and Thailand as well but we ran out of space. There is video of ADE651 training in Thailand so presumably they sold some but yes my understanding is it is overwhelmingly a GT200 problem in Thailand. We took apart the "black box" card reader of a GT200 - there was nothing in it - and we dismantled the GT200 detection card and it was just a laminated card and a bit of paper - not even a McCormick anti-theft tag. We can get access to a GT200 and have more info if anyone wants it. The UK government's Control Order will apply to all ADE651 style bogus detectors not just the ADE651 and their statement that such devices do not work also applies to the GT200. BT - Feel free to contact me directly if you need any help with GT200. Meirion http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/8471187.stm
I watched the report on BBC World, where they stripped down a laminated card at a lab in Cambridge and found that it was void. It seems to me extraordinary that nobody did this before, when spending so much money to buy the machines.
Typical that only the negative implications are cited. OK so the bomb detector doesn't work. Think of all the economic flow-ons to Mercedes dealers. Bloody negative wowsers, so a few Issan grunts get blown up, how does that compare to the economic stimulus that flows down from way way above?
Thailand has bought pretty much the full range apart from the ADE165. They have the Sniffex Plus, already totally discredited, the GT200 and Ministry of Interior have bought the Alpha 6s.
- [So sorry BP; I really need to contact BBC reporter for GT200 problem.] "I'd like to contact Ms. Meirion Jones about GT-200 explosive detector." Dear Meirion, my name is Jessada, a science lecturer from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. My colleagues and I have been campaigning against GT200 bogus explosive detector for many months. [check my interview on a Thai telly at : www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JdGLKlaAMU] It's very hard here to convince the military and government that these Dowsing rods are so harmful for the country. Almost all of the press here also keeps their mouths shut. However, today we're very happy to hear that you've exposed the ADE-651 scam in Newsnight. I've also found you comment on Bangkok Pundit's Blog that you have also examined GT200 showing that it's even worse than ADE-651. We really need you help then. Could you make another Newsnight programme particularly on GT-200? The wise prime minister has just given a stupid comment on ADE-651 scam that he's not worry because ADE-651 is not the same brand as GT-200. Look forward to hearing your reply. Jessada. |
