Singapore Telecommunications Ltd., the largest telephone company in Southeast Asia, said its profit rose 10 percent last quarter on growing income from its Asian units. The company, also known as SingTel, said in a statement Wednesday that net income for the July-September period rose to 956 million Singapore dollars ($688 million), up from SG$868 million a year earlier. "Our strong financial results were achieved amid a cautious economic climate and despite the negative currency impact," SingTel Chief Executive Chua Sock Koong said in a statement. SingTel's stakes in operators in Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, India, the Philippines, Pakistan and Bangladesh account for more than half of the company's profits. Operating revenue rose to SG$4.1 billion from SG$3.9 billion a year earlier. Associated Press
