Int'l groups want Cambodian rights worker freed

Four prominent international human rights groups on Wednesday condemned the conviction of a Cambodian human rights worker for allegedly distributing anti-government leaflets. Leang Sokchouen, who works for the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights, was sentenced Monday to two years in prison and a 2 million riel ($500) fine, the groups' statement said, calling for his immediate release.

Cambodia boasts plans for Asia's tallest building

Impoverished Cambodia plans to build a 1,820-foot (555-meter) skyscraper, its prime minister said Wednesday, a feat that would give one of the region's least-developed capitals the tallest building in Asia. Prime Minister Hun Sen said he had approved a master plan for the skyscraper, which would be located about half a mile (one kilometer) from the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh — a dusty city of colonial villas, slums and one standout skyscraper, the recently completed Canadia Tower that is about 377 feet (115 meters) high.

Cambodia builds protest park far from gov't center

Cambodia is building a small park to accommodate demonstrators, but would-be protesters criticize the project as a means to throttle dissent by keeping them far from government offices. Democracy Square is 70 percent complete and should be finished by the end of September, said Sam Samuth, chief of Phnom Penh's Municipal garden bureau, on Thursday.

Cambodia halves sentence for Russian sex convict

A former Russian businessman convicted of sexually abusing more than a dozen Cambodian girls had his prison term reduced on Thursday from 17 years to eight. An Appeals Court cut the sentence of Alexander Trofimov on the grounds that he had apologized to the victims and their families and had been unaware that he had committed an offense under Cambodian law.

Fact: More people will travel independently

Well, the image of “travelling in tour groups” has taken a severe battering of late. First, there was the Hong Kong tour guide rant at a group of Chinese tourists for not shopping enough, which makes you wonder how long these zero-commission tours should be allowed to continue. Then, we watched in horror as a bungled attempt to rescue a group of tourists from the Hong Thai bus in Manila unfolded before our very eyes this week.

Khmer Rouge figure appeals war crimes conviction

The former chief jailer of the Khmer Rouge has appealed his conviction and 35-year prison sentence, his lawyer said Wednesday. Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch, was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity in July and sentenced to 35 years in prison — reduced to 19 years by time served and other factors.

Thailand and Cambodia to restore ambassadors

Thailand and Cambodia said Tuesday they are sending their ambassadors back to each other's country in hopes of easing a nine-month diplomatic spat between the neighbors. The step to normalizing ties came after Thailand's divisive former leader Thaksin Shinawatra quit his job as an adviser to the Cambodian government Monday, citing time constraints.

A new Border Guard Force (BGF) program deadline for the United Wa State Army (UWSA) and National Democratic Alliance Army (NDAA) also known as Mongla group has been scheduled. At an August 20 meeting, the Burmese junta instructed the two ceasefire groups to submit their agreement on transforming into BGF by the first week of September, said Shan Herald News.

Thaksin quits advisory role to Cambodia

Now Thailand's fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra has resigned as economics adviser to the Cambodian government, will diplomatic relations between Bangkok and Phnom Penh improve? Agence France-Presse's journalist Suy Se reported that Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva indicated Monday that they could reinstate the diplomats in light of Thaksin's departure, describing it as a "good sign", adding that "If relations return to normal, it is good for both countries to have ambassadors".

Thai ex-PM Thaksin resigns as adviser to Cambodia

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has resigned his posts as an adviser to the Cambodian government, nine months after his appointment helped fuel a diplomatic rift. A royal decree signed Monday by Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni said Thaksin requested an end to his roles as personal adviser to Prime Minister Hun Sen and economic adviser to the Cambodia government due to his "difficulty to fulfill his duty."
