Who will be the CEO of Satyam?

The race is on. Centre has disbanded the old board and appointed a new board with 3 members. Kiran Karnik former NASSCOM chief, Deepak Parekh - HDFC chairman and C. Achutan - former SEBI member.

The board met today and I guess came out with few action items. 2 things I could glean from various sources are :

  1. Providing a bridge loan or a temporary arrangement by the government to ease the liquidity situation.
  2. Asking Satyam’s clients for advance receivables.
  3. Coming up with actual Q3 numbers.
  4. Finding a new CEO and CFO

Swaminathan Aiyer in his Sunday column was calling for Narayana Murthy to save Satyam. I don’t doubt the capability of Narayana Murthy. But the problem with Narayana Murthy is he does not like Satyam. I am not sure why but he just doesn’t like it.

The statements he made immediately after Raju’s letter are startling. He mentioned that Infosys will not touch a tainted company like Satyam. I am not sure if Naryana Murthy has made those statements on his behalf or on the behalf of Infosys. The happenings at the Satyam are deplorable and so are the statements of Naryana Murthy.

There was really no need to make those bold statements. Since Mr. Murthy has already made those statements he cannot be the CEO of Satyam. That would be a paradox and many people will not like it. If he still wants the job then fine. Good for Satyam. But, brand Narayana Murthy might just take a hit.

Another name which is doing the rounds is Vivek Paul. Vivek was the former vice-chairman of Wipro. Now he is the partner at Texas Pacific Group. I guess Vivek would love to take the job if it is offered to him. He can have a go at Wipro and save the company and be a hero - all at the same time.

Vivek Paul made a comment here, which says that there might more companies which can come out. This makes me wonder if he was insinuating something or there are lot of skeletons in many companies. That particular comment may also indicate that he might not want the job.

Any other names for the hot seat?
