We heard Blackberry and its spoof Crackberry but what is Gooseberry? It is another berry in the email space. Only thing is it will send your emails to your phone. No GPRS, WiFi or any of the other modern day laundry list is required. It just requires your age old SMS or texting.

Gooseberry is a Email to SMS service. I have blogged about a different way of getting your Email to SMS. That method is a little crude and does not serve our purpose very well. You can only receive the subject line of the email and you cannot send emails. gooseberryLogo

How to do it :

  1. Enable IMAP access on your email account.
  2. Register for a new account on Gooseberry using your email address, Password of the email address and you phone number
  3. Login to your new account and configure for Allowed and blocked list.
  4. You are all set to receive your emails.

IMAP

Features :

  1. It has an allowed and blocked list to receive only the important emails
  2. SMS has its limitations and it compresses the messages by 30% to squeeze through the limit
  3. Works on GSM and CDMA no additional hardware required
  4. Receive and send emails
  5. Costs only 95 rupees per month
  6. Supports 37 email servers. There is a good chance that your server is supported. I use Gmail.

Caveats :

  1. Free for first few emails and will be charged for the rest. You have to recharge.

Now, will the companies ditch their Blackberry’s and check out Gooseberry to cut costs?
