Separating business units based upon the business they are in is the latest fad. Maybe fad is not the right word. The separation is done to unlock value and in turn have will increase focus. Bharti Airtel has separated its business into 9 new units. Now, Vodafone seems to be restructuring.
Vodafone Essar is hiving off its Telecom infrastructure business. Telecom Infrastructure is the business where the towers and other equipment is installed. Almost all the telecom companies have their own tower business. 3 GSM companies - Vodafone, IDEA and Airtel has come together to form joint venture forming Indus Towers.
Indus Towers operates 90,000 towers in 16 cities. Ortus Infratel will have 6000 additional towers which are not part of Indus. Essar Group has its own telecom infra called Essar Telecom Infrastructure which operates 4500 towers
If it wasn’t for the economy at least 2 tower businesses would have listed themselves. PS : Telecom towers are called as mobile masts in some areas. via (VCCircle)
