Apple stores selling 3G iPhone without contract. We need them in India too

3G iPhone in India is provided by Airtel and Vodafone who do not have 3G services yet. BSNL has 3G services and is offering 3G services via Blackberry devices. If available in India, BSNL users can get an iPhone. Not just BSNL but any other GSM providers can get an iPhone.

This news came a while ago saying that AT&T will be selling the phones. But, Apple store will be selling them. If done in India too, this might actually give a second life to 3G iPhone in India.

While the phones are still technically locked to AT&T service, it is possible (but not supported) to unlock the phones for use with other mobile service providers. In the US, that is largely limited to T-Moble and Metro PCS, although both GSM providers do not support the 3G network the iPhone 3G needs to connect at faster than EDGE speeds. (AppleInsider)

This might mean that one can buy the phone in the US, unlock it and use it in India. There will be no support but with the wealth of information online it should be fine. The phone costs the exact same amount with the dollar conversion. So subscribers who do not want to be tied to Airtel and Vodafone can actually go the extra distance.
