SMSGupShup has 22 million users in India. Much more than the Indian users of Facebook, Twitter and Orkut combined. Yet it doesn’t enjoy the same reputation or even the fraction of reputation of the other 3 biggies.

One reason as per Beerud Sheth, the founder of Webaroo which owns SMSGupShup is :

“ So why you not as famous as Mark Zuckerburg?” I ask Beerud Sheth, tongue firmly in cheek. Pat comes the reply: “Because in India, the approach is firangi, not tirangi.” as per HT.

1. Twitter – 1 million users in India
2. Facebook – 4 million users in India
3. Orkut – 12 million users in India
4. SMSGupShup – 22 million users in India.

Why is that all the 3 combined have 17 million users and SMSGupshup alone has 22 million users in India and yet it hasn’t reached the cult status?

Or is it just perception?

If a successful startup like GupShup doesn’t get global recognition and be a top notch product which the whole world can use, what happens to the other startups?

When it comes to online, is there something has India startup? As the world is flat, at least online.
