Social Media and Technology in Asia
Hi5 Thailand's Most Popular Mobile Social Network, Says Opera
Statistics from Opera’s state of the Mobile Web have shown an explosion in mobile social networking across the Southeast Asian region. According to the report, which is uses data from mobile uses using the Opera mobile web browser on their phone only, Google is the top destination for mobile internet users in Thailand. Interestingly Strangely, the report ranks Hi5 second making it the country’s number one mobile social network despite the enormous growth and popularity of Facebook in the country and its optimisation for mobile. Thailand’s list in full is. 1. Google 2. Hi5 3. Live.com 4. Facebook 5. Hotmail - – - It seems very unlikely that Hi5 would score more traffic than Facebook despite its statistical advantage with 6 million users in Thailand compared to Facebook’s 2 million. The report says more about Opera mobile users than Thailand’s 12 million mobile internet users (see here for mobile internet usage in Thailand statistics) – it seems Opera mobile customers prefer Hi5 over Facebook. It is no surprise to Google and Microsoft (live.com and hotmail) up there given the size of popularity of both brands in Thailand. Analysis of the Southeast Asia results below comes from allfacebook.com.

in other words: mobile opera calls home without asking the user? Don't think hi5 is bigger than facebook in th. from what i know in real life hi5 is much less popular than fb.
@Jan You're exactly right. There is no way Hi5 gets more traffic than Facebook on the web, let alone on mobile. Hi5 renders horribly on mobile, whereas Facebook is far better optimised. Will reword as perhaps this isn't emphasised enough.
[...] was recently named Thailand’s most popular mobile social network by Opera. This is unlikely to reflect reality however as the report was made using data gathered [...]
No, mobile Opera does NOT call home without asking the user. Opera Mini is DESIGNED to work on low-end phones by doing the page processing on the server. You can also get Opera Mobile which does not require a server, but since it's a full browser it can't be run on most regular feature phones. So no, Opera does not call home. Opera Mini is just designed in a way which lets it work on low end handsets.
That may be so preleiveme but it doesn't change the fact that this data is not representative of Thailand as a whole - which is the main point to be taken, calling home or not.
I was just responding to the FUD that Opera was calling home. I have no clue about what's representative and what isn't :D
It is a facebook analysis, Hi5 Thailand's mast popular network. |
