The national government will be opening a number of women's shelters around the country, starting with test runs in Seoul and Busan. The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced on the 30th that beginning in July it will operate 10 group homes in Seoul and Busan for women who have suffered domestic violence or sexual assault to help them recover their independence. The group homes will be multifamily units and the victimized women and their children will live in them rent-free, paying only maintenance fees, and may stay for up to four years. Two to five families will stay in each home. The Ministry will operate "Self-Reliance Aid" in each home, offering the women assistance finding a job, medical treatment, and legal aid. Based on the results of this initial experiment, the Ministry plans to open more homes across the country starting next year.

A step in the right direction. 10 homes with a maximum of five families each provides little chance for the majority of women/children suffering from abuse, but as suggested, hopefully it is the beginning of public awareness and support for those in need.
Sounds great and more realistic than the ones I know of here in the U.S. as long as they keep out the trouble makers and it doesn't become a bureaucratic nightmare and dead-end road like the one I experienced in the States. The women had to get their abuser to rescue them.
