On the one hand, this new law appears to be good news. On the other hand, it's shocking that up until now you could use the fact that you have insurance to avoid being arrested for hitting a kid with your car and then driving away. Beginning today traffic accidents involving children being struck in school zones and other areas where children are protected wil lead to criminal punishments regardless of whether the driver has insurance or reaches an agreement with the victim. On the 22nd the Daegu Police Department began implementing a new traffic law which makes hit-and-run accidents involving children in school zones as serious an offense as crossing the center line or drunken driving. Accordingly, if a child is hit in a school zone, where caution is required for children's safety, an arrest will be made regardless of whether the driver has insurance or reaches an agreement with the victim.
